Koi (also known as Carp) have been thought of to have deep meaning and significance. Traditionally, koi have been associated with strength, courage and perseverance. According to Japanese legend, if a koi succeeded in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate on the Yellow River, it would be transformed into a dragon. It was because of this legend that koi became known as a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement. And in Buddhism, it is believed that humans "swim" through the "ocean of suffering" without fear, just like the courageous koi swims through water.
